[edit] How to use SKUs

Usually the seller has already established a SKU scheme. Otherwise, they are probably just using a default, for example a prefix of "SKU1" and 6 digits following.

However, you might consider a more sophisticated scheme. For example:

  • use the person's initials (who's doing the data entry)
  • use the date
  • use the type of item

For example, the first letter can be "S". The next two letters can be the person's initials (e.g. "MC"). The next two digits the year, the next letter is the month (A-K), next two the month day. So for today, the SKU prefix will be "SMC06E05" and the number of additional digits can be 3 (not likely to enter more than 1000 items per day - 0 - 999).

Alphanumeric Sort

The industry standard (and our recommendation) is to use fixed-length SKUs. For example, use S000 S001 ... S100 S101, etc. to have our default sorting produce the result you expected. We also recommend using a letter in the SKU to prevent spreadsheet programs from dropping leading SKUs.
